Engineers Queensland

Australia’s Queensland is a resource rich state with large natural reserves of high grade coal, natural gas (LNG), coal seam gas (CSG) and minerals, a majority of which can be found in the Surat, Bowen and Galilee basin regions. Queensland also has a growing population and large tourism industry, due in no short part to its favorable warm weather, and popular regions stretch from the Gold Coast in the South East to Tropical North Queensland in the far North, where ancient world heritage rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef are popular draw cards.

The demand for Queensland’s resources, along with its popularity as a lifestyle destination, has seen the design, development and construction of some of the largest engineering projects in Australia. These opportunities have allowed for employment growth, particularly for engineers with experience and knowledge in the following engineering disciplines

  • Electrical
  • Process & Control
  • Automation
  • PLC
  • SCADA
  • Computer
  • Mechanical
  • Construction
  • Civil
  • Environmental
  • Geotechnical
  • Structural
  • Mine
  • Project Management

Engineers in Queensland have the opportunity to work on large and extremely complex engineering projects, especially in the mining and gas & oil industries, although due to the sometimes harsh climate in Australia engineers also have to deal with some of the most challenging environmental conditions on earth, including high temperatures, dust, moisture, wildlife and isolation. Due to the remote location of many projects, engineers are required to have accommodation based close to each engineering site, usually in the form of re-locatable buildings or ‘camps’.

Queensland engineers are transported to/from remote sites using FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) or if closer to main metropolitan centres DIDO (Drive-in Drive-Out) and BIBO (Bus-in Bus-out) are popular options. Due to the scale of Queensland engineering projects, most engineers are required to work consecutive shifts while on site, in many cases 12 hour shifts for weeks at a time, switching between day and night shift as the project demands.

Although the resources industry in Queensland employs a large base of qualified and experienced engineers, other engineering opportunities include construction and upgrades of roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, hospitals, universities, shopping malls, power stations, transmission networks, ports, rail systems, building services, water treatment plants, agriculture and tourism projects.
